Someone told me recently that he won’t see a therapist because he doesn’t want to get stuck in therapy for years. It’s unfortunate that he will miss out on the benefits of therapy, but I get it. More traditional therapies involve weekly sessions for years at a time and clients can feel uncomfortable about bringing up the need for a break.
Maybe you want to move quickly; maybe you want more time to unravel a difficult past. It’s really up to you. Therapy can be brief and intermittent. Just like you do with your chiropractor or acupuncturist, you can schedule as needed.
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer, but when you are looking for a therapist, it’s a good idea to ask about the expected duration and frequency. You can find something that fits for you.
